Pressure washing a car

What’s the Best PSI for Pressure Washing My Car?

One of the best ways to keep the appearance of your car looking shiny and new is using pressure washers on a regular basis.

Whether you are a car enthusiast who washes their car every week or just want to get it done quickly, using a pressure washer is the best method.

For our latest blog, Britclean will talk you through the cleaning process in five simple steps.

5 Steps for Using Pressure Washers on Your Car

1. Choose an Appropriate Pressure Washer and Nozzle – When washing your car, it is important to use a pressure washer with the appropriate power and water flow. The higher the PSI (Pounds per square inch) the more force the water will have as it leaves the tip of the washer. The higher the GPM (Gallons per minute), the more water the machine will release.

2. Park Your Car in a Good Spot for Washing – It is crucial to park your car in an open space, away from other cars or objects that you do not want to get wet or damaged by water. When using an electric pressure washer, ensure you have access to an outlet to power your washer too.

3. Rinse Your Car – Before applying any cleaner to your car, make sure to rinse and spray off any mud or other debris stuck to the surface. Britclean would recommend starting 4-5 feet away from your car and move closer once you have tested the jet washer. Ensure all of your windows are closed and the car doors and the boot are closed so you don’t get any water inside.

4. Applying Detergent – Most pressure washers have special compartments for cleaning detergents, just make sure the detergent you are using is suitable for the machine.

5. Rinse off Detergent – Using a 40-degree tip, rinse the detergent off your car. We would recommend holding the washer at a 45-degree angle and rinse downward from the top of the vehicle.

Now you have successfully washed your car using a pressure washer, be sure to follow these steps each time your vehicle needs cleaning.

How Often Should Pressure Washers Be Used on Commercial Properties?

Commercial property managers will understand buildings can get grimy and dirty over time, with pressure washers being the best way to clean them.

Whether it is from standard foot traffic, harsh climate and storms, or even human factors such as graffiti, power washing outdoor areas will ensure the property maintains its value and looks clean and inviting for visitors.

The Difference Between Soft, Pressure and Power Washing

It is important to know the difference between power washing, pressure washing and soft washing before we look at a cleaning schedule.

Soft Washing – Apply a cleaning detergent with a pressure similar to a standard garden hose or showerhead. Areas typically cleaned with soft washing include roofs or any fragile surfaces, as this method does not create much friction and won’t get rid of any caked-on dirt and grime.

Pressure Washing – The biggest difference between pressure and power washing is the type of nozzle used. Pressure washers have just one tip on the nozzle, with water sprayed forcefully at a high pressure which allows the technician to flush out debris easily.

Power Washing – When cleaning the exterior of buildings, power washing is the safest method. Unlike a pressure washer, the power washer nozzle is equipped with multiple tips that allow the technician to choose the most appropriate pressure. Power washers utilise heated water, which is more effective at killing any bacteria present in mould and mildew.

A Schedule for Outdoor Power Washing

Here are some typical guidelines for outdoor power washing –

Seasonally – As the season’s change, it is a useful exercise to schedule outdoor power washing to keep your property looking attractive. Additionally, leaves and dust can accumulate in autumn with pollen building up in spring and summer which can affect those with allergies.

Rooftop Maintenance – Office buildings should have exteriors, entrances, sidewalks, car parks and rubbish areas power washed at least twice a year to prevent the buildup of dirt, grease and seasonal elements we’ve already mentioned.

Post Bad Weather – After heaving rainfall, it is common to call a roofing company to repair any roof damage. You should also consider adding a professional power washing service to complement your post-storm repairs. Plenty of dirt, grime and debris that has built around your building could have been swept onto your roof during the storm.

Techniques That Work Best for Pressure Washers in Agriculture

Before beginning the cleaning process with a pressure washer, you will need to ensure a pre-approved washing area has been identified and agreed upon. This means the grease, oil and residue from wash water will be controlled and disposed of in a manner that will limit your liability plus it meets applicable environmental guidelines.

Why Pressure Washers are Vital for Farmers

Once the equipment has been prepped and readied, the first step to cleaning your agricultural equipment is giving it a thorough hot water rinse and mud knockdown.

Using hot water for the pre-rinse will speed up mud and grease emulsification and prepare the surface for the chemical to be most effective. This chemical can then be applied through low pressure, a downstream injector that gives it greater control over the amount used which helps control cost and quality.

While one gunner is applying the chemical, another member of the team needs to be following behind with a specialised vehicle brush, working the chemical in and the greasy residue will be loosened.

When the equipment has been thoroughly pre-soaked and brushed with chemical, both members of the team should start detail rinsing. This is important to rinse quickly to ensure the soap does not dry, spotting the surface, but not too quickly as this could mean missing key buildup areas. If the soap does dry, simply wet the surface using water, brush and detail rinse.

Problem Areas to Avoid

The key to cleaning agricultural equipment is talking to the client upfront and understanding their expectations. While some may be focused on budget others may just want to get chunky mud and greased knocked off as quickly as possible.

Using mild detergent will produce good results. For the area you are working also understand wastewater collection and disposal regulations.

When using hot water, keep the temperature low enough to avoid damaging gaskets, belts, seals, paints plus lettering on equipment.

Make sure to use proper eye and skin covers (PPE) when cleaning machines that have been used to apply chemicals, whether pesticides or herbicides.

Your Guide to Using Pressure Washers on Farms

Agricultural and farm machinery should be cleaned using a pressure washer over an unpaved surface, such as grass or gravel. The reason for choosing unpaved surfaces allows soap-filled water to soak into the ground to be filtered and eventually recharge the groundwater.

You should wash your equipment no closer than 100 feet from the wellhead of a well (if you have one). Another reason this is a good idea is that you do not want to wash on a paved surface because that water could eventually be discharged into a lake or stream via storm drains, which leaves you open to environmental litigation.

How to Use Pressure Washers on Farm Equipment

Here is Britclean‘s 8-step guide to using pressure washers on farm equipment effectively –

1. Wash your equipment after every use
2. Attach the water hose to your power washer and check the fuel and oil levels. Start the pressure washer and spray your equipment with water and detergent.
3. Use a low pressure as this way the water and the detergent will not splash away.
4. Spray from a distance of 2-3 feet from the surface, avoiding streaking by starting at the lowest point on the machinery and work your way up towards the highest point.
5. Apply enough detergent to dissolve the dirt at the surface.
6. Allow 5-10 minutes for the detergent to begin dissolving the debris you are cleaning.
7. Use high water pressure to remove the dirt from the surface.
8. Use plenty of water to flush away the dirt and this time start from the top and work your way towards the bottom to avoid having the dirt run over the clean areas. Make sure to use a wide spray angle.

Prepare for the Return to Workplace with Pressure Washers

With the recent announcement from the government regarding the easing restrictions in the coming weeks; now is the best time to use a pressure washer to ensure your business is ready to welcome everyone back.

While you may think that pressure washing machines are only used in industrial settings, they can also be employed on commercial properties to help the exterior of your building look spectacular.

If your office building has been scarcely populated over the past 12 months due to the pandemic, your employees returning to what looks like a shiny new building is just the tonic!

Below are five reasons why you should choose one of Britclean‘s pressure washing machines.

5 Reasons to Choose Pressure Washers

1. Easier Operation and Maintenance – Once you have picked your pressure washer up or had it delivered, you will be able to plug it in and get ready to blast away any dirt and grime. Our electric washers eliminate all the maintenance needed for petrol versions plus they are lighter and safer to use.

2. No Fuel – Electric pressure washing machines do not need petrol to run, eliminating the need for cooldown or recovery time between uses. Simply plug it in and it will be ready to go!

3. Quiet Use – Electric pressure washing machines create substantially less noise than their petrol counterparts. On average petrol washers emit up to 100dB of noise whereas electric versions emit around 78dB of noise.

4. Greener Cleaning – Electric washers do not require oil or fuel to run, meaning they also do not emit noxious fumes or create a byproduct that is harmful to the environment. The lack of oil or fuel means no accidental spills plus with no fumes you can use electric washers indoors or inside enclosed spaces.

5. Cost-Effective – Electric washers are a more cost-effective cleaning solution than petrol versions. The units are cheaper plus you do not have to buy fuel and oil or any expensive spare parts.

Pressure Washers for Farmers and Winegrowers

Here at Britclean, we have worked with farmers and winegrowers for years, helping them keep their premises clean with our wide range of pressure washers.

For this blog, we explain how pressure washing machines can be used in both environments.

Keep Farms Clean

Farmers know their main ally is their equipment and preventing it from breaking down will save them heavy repair costs. The maintenance of this equipment will guarantee efficiency and safety at work too.

This is the reason why owning or hiring one of our pressure washers, will keep the vehicles used in the fields clean and remove mud and soil from your yards, drainage channels, warehouses, loading and unloading areas plus areas where sales and retail take place.

For motorised vehicles, cold water pressure cleaners are the best solution to dissolve grease and oil from engines and gears whilst using special detergents.

High precision lances and nozzles will prevent the dirt from infiltrating into the smallest areas and allow you to store perfectly clean seasonal tools without worrying about residues corroding and ruining the materials in the long term.

Why Pressure Washers are Important for Wineries

Using a high-pressure jet can reach the marc waste and the remains of a previous vinification process which builds up in barrels, barriques and plants.

It is easy to imagine what would happen to the rather delicate fermentation process if residual materials or contaminants weren’t carefully removed. This runs the risk of ruining a process that lasts up to 12 months. This is why high-quality pressure washing machines are great for small and large wineries.

Choosing Between Electric and Petrol Pressure Washers?

Here at Britclean, we offer customers the choice of electric and petrol pressure washers; but do you know which one is best for your chosen application?

If you are unsure, do not worry, as we put together this guide to show you the difference between the two.

The Difference between Electric and Petrol Pressure Washers

Electric pressure washers are typically considered to be more suited to domestic use instead of petrol machines. They run cleaner and quieter, starting with a simple touch of a button.

Electric models are also lighter and offer the power required for the usual home and garden pressure washing tasks. They will need to be plugged into an electrical outlet or compatible extension lead. We advise taking extra care to not trip over the cable or get your electrical connections wet.

Alternatively, petrol pressure washers are recommended for regular and professional use. These machines are more heavy-duty than electric models and will often give you more power. Petrol machines are the best choice for large scale jobs plus they offer more mobility and do not require a power outlet nearby.

Best Pressure Washing Tasks

Here is a brief summary of the many cleaning tasks you can complete with a pressure washing machine –

  • Prepare surfaces such as walls, decking, fences, sheds or piece of garden furniture for painting. The pressure washer will blast away stubborn dirt and old, flaking paint
  • Wash bicycles, motorbikes, cars, vans, trailers, tractors and boats
  • Patio cleaning
  • Wash out smelly wheelie bins
  • Wash outdoor power equipment such as lawnmowers
  • Clean out gutters
