How to Get the Most From Pressure Washers

When you have hired a pressure washer from Britclean, it is important to read the instructions it came with very carefully. Power washers can be dangerous, so for numerous tasks, we would recommend wearing protective gear such as a hard hat, safety goggles and gloves.

Every power washer works differently, so we have put together a handy guide in this blog to ensure you get the most out of your equipment.

7 Ways to Prolong Pressure Washing Machines

Ensure All Connections are Secure  – Before using your pressure washer for the time, make sure connections for all hose, water and air are secure. If you discover any leaks, the washer will not work properly. Also, check the power cord is firmly attached to the outlet.

Turn Water Source Completely On – If you are using a pressure washer that needs to be attached to a water source, turn the faucet completely on. You will be able to adjust the pressure on the machine, but it will need the faucet’s full requirement of water to work well.

Attach Nozzles Whilst Pressure is Locked and Off – If you are using particular attachments, you will need to add them to the nozzle while your pressure washer is off and locked.

Protect Equipment, Building Features and Nearby Plants – We would recommend clearing the area as much as possible, protecting items such as plants, equipment, light fixtures and any fragile building features like tarps.

Begin with a Low Setting – Always make sure your pressure washer is on its lowest setting when turning it on, as this will allow to slowly increase pressure safely as needed – preventing kickback.

Hold the Nozzle at an Angle – When using the pressure washer, do not aim it directly at items you are cleaning. Instead, hold it an angle, which will wash dirt and debris away rather than against the surface.

Use Up and Down Motions – When cleaning a surface, begin at the bottom and move upward guiding the spray down over the same area to rinse it off. Continue this motion until the entire surface is cleaned.

Using a pressure washers makes a wide range of cleaning tasks quite simple. Deciding on what you will be using your machine for before buying, will make the choice quite easy.

Your Guide to Pressure Washer Hose Repairs

If you have been using pressure washers for a considerable amount of time, you are likely to experience a leak in the hose at some point.

As the leading supplier of pressure washers and industrial vacuums across Staffordshire, Cheshire and Derbyshire, Britclean understand the importance of keeping your products functioning for the longest time possible.

Sometimes the issue comes from touching the exhaust on a gas-powered washer with the hose, whereas it could also be old age or even just bad luck.

Pressure Washer Repairs are Different to Garden Hoses

A leak in your pressure washer hose cannot be fixed in the same way as a garden hose. Firstly, the patch won’t last as the high-pressure water will force it loose. Even a small patched leak can lead to a serious injury when it bursts open and the high-pressure water hits your body.

At the very least, you will get soaked and whatever washing task you had planned is not going to get done.

The layers of wire mesh and plastic distribute the water evenly throughout your hose which contains the pressure. Repairing the hose requires each layer to be shaped and repaired correctly or it simply won’t last.

If you feel this is not the best course of action; you can always choose to replace the hose instead.

How Britclean Repair Power Washer Hoses

If you are unfamiliar with the process of repairing a power washer hose, here are the guidelines our team follow to get your pressure washer working as good as new.

1. Switch off the pressure washer, and if it is electrical we will unplug it.
2. Press the hose trigger which releases any water from inside the hose.
3. Discover the leak and dry the area around the leak.
4. We will make a square cut on each side of the leak.
5. The diameter of the hose needs measuring.
6. A compression seal with a gate compression fitting needs creating, with the female repair coupling reverse threaded and spun counterclockwise once fitted onto the hose. We will use an adjustable wrench to tighten it, with the male repair coupling fitting inside the hose tubing with motor oil used to lubricate the tip.
7. The hose will be placed in a vice or we can use two adjustable wrenches which connect and tighten the two pieces.
8. Finally, we will connect the M22 adapter and screw the adapter onto the pressure washer.

How Pressure Washers Clean Mossy Paving

Now the sun is shining again and Spring has truly sprung, you could be considering cleaning tasks outdoors that you have put off for too long.

Mossy paving is one of the biggest eyesores that can develop on your property, but using a pressure washer from Britclean will deal with this issue in no time.

For our latest blog, we are going to explain the process of ridding moss from your pavements.

Get the Garden of Your Dreams with Britclean

While cleaning moss is never top of anyone’s favourite garden chores, the end result of a pressure wash will leave you beaming with pride at your paths and patios.

You will need to bear in mind that when you are cleaning, the water pressure is greatest immediately in front of the nozzle. This means that stubborn dirt and moss can be cleaned off at close range, whilst light dirt or sensitive areas will need cleaning at a greater distance.

Moss forms a thick layer on paved surfaces, but it also remains in the pores of the paving stones which require a top-quality pressure washer from Britclean to remove effectively.

The Karcher HD 7/11 4m pressure washer, is one of the best models we currently have in stock that is ideal for cleaning patios. Don’t take our word for it though, here is a testimonial from one of our customers Ryan Gallimore,

“This Karcher pressure washer is perfect for my stone patio flags, cleans it up in no time!”

One of the most unique features of this model is the dirt blaster nozzle, which provides an even greater cleaning performance for even the toughest tasks.

11 Things You Can’t Pressure Wash

Although pressure washers have an array of uses, there are certain things you can’t use them on.

Here’s a list of 11 areas you shouldn’t use pressure washers for cleaning –

1. Wood Siding – Water from pressure washers can damage insulation, electrical wiring and spur mould growth on wood siding plus they can dent aluminium and vinyl siding.
2. Electrical Panels and Meters – Electricity based on the exterior of your home should not be pressure washed, as this can force water into cracks and crevices and cause damage that leads to costly repairs.
3. Asphalt Shingles – If your roof has asphalt shingles never pressure wash, as it will remove the granules which are important for protecting the roof. Using a pressure washer on a high place can be dangerous as once you squeeze the trigger, the powerful recoil on the spray wand could knock you off balance, and maybe from a ladder too.
4. Air Conditioners – The intense flow of water from a pressure washer can crush the delicate fins and restrict airflow that could shorten the life of the unit.
5. Old Mortar – Weathered brick houses and landscape surfaces with mortar can be damaged by pressure washers, as any loose material, especially on older properties will be blasted away.
6. Living Things – It may seem like a no-brainer, but do not pressure wash humans, pets and plants as the force of the water can cause physical harm and destroy plants.
7. Painted Surfaces – A pressure washer will easily chip paint off of most surfaces, so we would recommend using a low-pressure flow of water to wash painted items such as your porch floor or painted outdoor furniture.
8. Windows – The high pressure will break windows and cause you a major expense to replace.
9. Outdoor Lighting Fixtures – Outdoor lighting is built to withstand rain and other outdoor elements as you will risk forcing water in cracks and causing damage.
10. Gutters – It can be tempting, but never clean out the inside of your gutters using a pressure washer. We would recommend removing debris by hand and rinse the inside with a less intense flow of water.
11. Stained Wood – A pressure washer will pull stain right off of wood surfaces.

Why You Should Consider Pressure Washers from Britclean

Pressure washers from Britclean are the ideal cleaning solution for a variety of tasks, with plenty of advantages.

For our latest blog, we are going to share the four main advantages of our pressure washers.

Four Reasons to Choose a Pressure Washer

1. Time and Energy Saving – Using a high-pressure cleaner means you won’t need to scrub with a sponge, making them a great time saver. When cleaning the underside of vehicles or cut-outs in the facade, you can also reach them easier with a pipe and nozzle.
2. Doing Your Bit for the Environment – Pressure washers use less water than other cleaning solution, making them more effective. In most cases, cleaning agents are not required which makes them a money saver too and keeps pollutants from nature. Electrically operated high-pressure cleaners have no direct exhaust gases, with only electricity consumed.
3. Protecting Your Health – Pressure washers only work with water, meaning there is no harmful residue. This makes the cleaned objects and surfaces typically completely harmless for children and allergy sufferers.
4. Effective Cleaning – You can avoid unsightly results, plus cleaning marks on smooth surfaces such as those from rags or brushes on car paints.

What Can I Clean with a Pressure Washer?

The amount of applications a high-pressure cleaner can be used for is quite diverse.

Here are some examples to consider –

  • Sidewalk tiles in the garden
  • Removal of dirt and moss from terraces
  • Garden furniture and dirty garden tools

Identifying Common Problems with Commercial Vacuums

Industrial vacuums can be extremely complicated machines that are often required to tackle challenging tasks in a commercial environment. Although Britclean‘s units are maintained to the highest standards, faults can still occur sometimes.

Spotting the first signs of trouble helps to prevent more costly repairs and downtime, which is why you should list the mechanical issues and look to discuss these with one of our trained professionals.

For our latest blog, we are going to share some of the most common problems you can get with commercial vacuums.

4 Commercial Vacuum Issues

1. Lack of Suction
If your unit has started to show signs of low suction or has ceased entirely, the chances are high that a clogged air filter is a problem.
Our team will be able to remove the filter and check for any debris plus the filter may need replacing entirely.

2. Broken Internal Belt
Drive belts are put under great pressure with the mechanisms allow the scrubbing brushes to rotate, which means that the belt could snap on occasion. Symptoms of this include the smell of burning rubber or a scrubbing head that suddenly stops rotating.

3. Scrubbing Brushes that Fail to Spin
Although the broken belt can trigger this problem, the brushes themselves can also become jammed. Once the unit is powered down the heads will need examining and a check will take place to ensure there is no debris such as hair or twine is impeding their motion. Our specialists will briefly scrutinise the brush roll assembly to make sure that no bearings have become lost or damaged.

4. Weak or Inoperative Motor
The electronic control board, known as the PCB, may have become damaged. The mains fuse could have tripped due to a perceived overload. Broken drive or cog belts could also cause an engine to cease. All of these issues need to be diagnosed by a trained professional from Britclean.

The Difference Between Power Washing and Pressure Washing

Pressure washing and power washing are often interchangeable terms, with both considered to be the same thing by people not familiar with the cleaning industry.

There are some differences between the two, which we are going to explore for our latest blog.

Power Washing vs. Pressure Washing

The difference between power washing and pressure washing is the heat, with the jet wash in a power washing machine using heated water whereas the water is a pressure washer isn’t heated.

The main advantage of a power washer is the heated water is more able to clear tough-to-clean spaces with grease, salt, mildew and grime. The heated water, much in the same way as doing the dishes or washing your hands, makes it easier to clean surfaces. This makes the power washer more of a heavy-duty machine.
Power washers are the smart choice for cleaning concrete, as it will not damage the surface.

Understanding Pressure Washers and their Uses

A pressure washer is equipped with a high-pressure water spray that is able to clean large surfaces, comprehensively removing dirt, dust, mud, grime, stains, salt, mold and chewing gum.
This makes a pressure washer perfect for cleaning the following areas –

  • Stairways, walkways, patios, driveways and paths
  • Exterior facade of residential and commercial buildings
  • Public spaces such as car parks
  • The seats and grounds of cinemas
  • Vehicles such as cars, buses, trucks and boats

Pressure washers are one of the most effective ways to give a building a low-cost facelift. You can also keep your premises clean on a daily, weekly or a monthly basis and get your floors looking brand new in no time. This also means you will maintain the quality of your property and retain its value.
